But especially <strong>in men after puberty<\/strong>, this disease can sometimes affect not only the salivary <strong>glands, but also the testicles<\/strong>. The discomfort that occurs in this case is called <strong>mumps orchitis<\/strong> ; that is, <strong>testicular inflammation caused by the mumps virus<\/strong>.  <\/p><p>The mumps virus (paramyxovirus) settles in the salivary glands after entering the body. However, in some individuals, especially <strong>men past puberty<\/strong>, the virus can also reach the testicles. Usually, <strong>4\u20138 days after<\/strong> having mumps, <strong>pain, swelling, tenderness and redness<\/strong> develop in one testicle or, rarely, in both testicles.  <\/p><p>Mumps orchitis <strong>is a preventable complication<\/strong>. The most effective method of protection is the <strong>MMR vaccine<\/strong>given in childhood. Thanks to this vaccine, it is possible to prevent cases of mumps and therefore the development of orchitis. If a young person with mumps has testicular pain, swelling and fever, a <strong>urologist<\/strong> should be consulted immediately.
